Edge of the River explores the anatomy of an unprecedented natural catastrophe and the gritty, unrelenting reality of community survival. The core question driving this film is: How do you rebuild life, a home, and a regional economy when the landscape itself has been fundamentally rewritten overnight? Set against the backdrop of Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene in 2024, the film investigates the intersection of sudden devastation and long-term grassroots recovery. Mountain towns, typically shielded by geography, experienced catastrophic flooding with water levels surging to unimaginable heights. The immediate shock captured national headlines. However, this project focuses on what happens long after the news trucks leave. It follows the months and years of arduous recovery, examining how residents, tradespeople, and dedicated grassroots nonprofits continue to rebuild homes and infrastructure from the ground up.

The project’s thematic stakes probe deep human questions of faith, endurance, and renewal in the face of overwhelming odds. Drawing a subtle parallel to enduring narratives of catastrophic floods and survival, the film looks at how communities find hope when the familiar landmarks of their lives have been washed away. Structurally, the documentary combines immersive, high-impact introductory edits and custom motion graphics with archival footage of the floods. To elevate the narrative spine, the production pairs a cinematic eye with script and narration crafted by documentary Emmy-winning writer Ken Fay. Ultimately, Edge of the River aims to transcend a standard regional news retrospective, offering a universal portrait of human resilience. Built from inception with a clear distribution and community-engagement roadmap, the film is designed to speak directly to audiences impacted by displacement, while honoring the indomitable spirit of the Blue Ridge communities.
