Moving past the fleeting spotlight of initial news cycles, Edge of the River is a gripping feature documentary that explores the profound human and structural toll of regional hurricane devastation. Set against the backdrop of local waterways and landscapes, the film pulls back the curtain on the unvarnished reality of disaster recovery. Through intimate portraits of residents and dedicated volunteers, the film captures the grit, endurance, and extraordinary community-led rebuilding efforts required when the floodwaters recede. At its core, the film is a powerful testament to human agency, exploring universal themes of perseverance, local heritage, and the enduring strength of communities refusing to be washed away. These firsthand accounts guide an emotional and conceptual arc, weaving a deliberate thematic thread from catastrophic destruction to spiritual and communal renewal. Drawing symbolic parallels to Biblical flood narratives in which familiar geographies were completely rewritten, and mountains were overwhelmed by water, the story transitions into an exploration of cleansing, perseverance, and rebirth, evoking the deep symbolic resonance of baptism.

History isn’t just preserved in books or museums; sometimes, people shape it by hand and bring it back to life. From Tree to Table captures an extraordinary journey across time, geography, and legacy. The wood at the heart of this project carries a rare and historic provenance: a majestic copper beech tree known as “The Cousin’s Tree,” originally planted by President Theodore Roosevelt on his historic Sagamore Hill estate in Oyster Bay, New York. After being salvaged from the historic estate, with roots tied to the legacy of conservation and community supporters like Charles Wang, the timber traveled south to North Carolina. Now, it is being meticulously transformed into a stunning, one-of-a-kind table by Lagniappe Woodworks. It is a powerful meditation on craftsmanship, memory, and bringing history back home.
